How to

How to view and inspect an SVG file

An SVG is a picture written as code: shapes, paths, colors and text described in XML. Browsers draw it, but they do not tell you what is inside. This viewer shows the picture and the facts behind it: the size it declares, how many paths and groups it has, which colors and fonts it uses, and anything that may go wrong when you use it elsewhere.

  1. Open the SVG. Choose a file, drop it on the box, or paste the code into the code panel. Compressed SVGZ files work too.
  2. Look closely. Zoom in to check edges and small details, scroll to move around, and switch the background to checks, white or dark to see transparent areas and light artwork.
  3. Read the details. Width, height and viewBox, element counts, every color with its code, and fonts the file expects to find.
  4. Edit or clean up. Change the code and watch the preview update. Clean up the code removes editor leftovers, comments and metadata.
  5. Save or convert. Download the SVG, copy the code, or send it straight to the PNG, JPG, PDF, ICO, DXF or STL converter.

What the warnings mean

Text with fonts: the letters are drawn with whatever font the viewing computer has, so they can change on another machine; convert text to outlines in your editor for a logo. Linked files: images or fonts loaded from the web are missing when the SVG is used as a picture. Embedded pictures: a PNG or JPG inside the SVG does not become sharper when scaled. Scripts: some sites refuse SVG uploads with scripts; this viewer never runs them.

What Clean up the code removes

Comments, the XML declaration, metadata blocks, and the private attributes and elements Inkscape and other editors leave behind. Shapes, colors, sizes and ids are not touched, so the picture stays the same; the size saving is shown after each clean up. Text spacing is left as it is in files that contain text.

To make an SVG from a picture, use PNG to SVG or vectorize image. For cutting and printing, SVG to DXF and SVG to STL.

Questions people ask

Is this SVG viewer online and free?

Yes, free with no sign-up and no limit. The SVG opens in your browser and is never uploaded, which matters for logos and client artwork. It is drawn as an image, so any script inside the file does not run. You can view, inspect, edit the code and download the result.

How do I view SVG files on Windows 11?

Any browser opens them: right-click the file, choose Open with and pick Edge or Chrome. File Explorer does not show SVG previews on its own; Microsoft's free PowerToys adds an SVG preview pane and thumbnails. Or drop the file on this page to see its size, colors and code as well as the picture.

How to open SVG file in mobile?

Open this page on the phone, tap the box and pick the SVG from your files or downloads. It is shown at once and you can zoom in, change the background and convert it to PNG. Most phone galleries do not list SVG files, because they are drawings made of code rather than photos.

Can I see the paths inside an SVG?

Yes. The Details panel counts every element: paths, shapes, groups, text and embedded images, and lists the colors and fonts the file uses. The code panel shows the markup, and editing it redraws the picture as you type, so you can change a color or a path and check the result straight away.
