Choosing a chart
Not sure which chart fits your data?
Start from the question you want the reader to answer. The chart follows from it.
- How does the whole split into parts?
- Use a pie chart for two to six parts of one total.
- Which is bigger, and by how much?
- Use a bar graph to compare amounts across categories.
- How did it change over time?
- Use a line graph for trends across days, months or years.
- What do these groups have in common?
- Use a Venn diagram for overlaps between two or three sets.
- What happened, and in what order?
- Use a timeline for events, histories and plans.
