How to convert SVG to STL
An SVG is flat; an STL is a solid made of triangles that a slicer like Cura, PrusaSlicer or Bambu Studio turns into printing paths. To get from one to the other, every filled shape in the SVG is raised straight up to the height you choose, with its holes kept open. That is all this converter does, and it does it on your device.
- Add your file. An SVG, or a PNG or JPG that is traced into shapes first. Nothing is uploaded.
- Set the size. Type the width of the model in millimeters; the depth follows the drawing. Then the height of the shapes.
- Add a base plate if needed. Letters and separate shapes print as loose pieces unless something joins them. A plate of 1 to 2 mm with a small margin turns them into one sign or badge.
- Mirror for stamps. A rubber or clay stamp prints in reverse, so mirror the design and the impression reads the right way.
- Check the 3D preview and download. Drag the preview to turn the model, then download the STL and open it in your slicer.
Holes, islands and fill rules
The inside of an O, the window of a tag and a star inside that window are all handled the way the SVG draws them. The converter follows each shape's fill rule, even-odd or nonzero, so a hole is a hole and an island inside a hole is solid again. Shapes that overlap in the SVG overlap in the model, which slicers merge when they print.
Good sizes to start from
For a keychain, 40 to 60 mm wide with 2 to 3 mm of height. For cookie cutters and outlines, keep thin parts at least 1 mm wide, about two passes of a standard 0.4 mm nozzle. For lettering on a plate, raise the letters 1 to 1.5 mm above a 2 mm plate. Very fine detail from a photo trace may be smaller than your printer can draw.
Cutting the shape instead of printing it? SVG to DXF and PNG to DXF write the same outlines for laser cutters and CNC. To make an SVG from a picture first, use PNG to SVG or vectorize image.
Questions people ask
Is this SVG to STL converter free?
Yes. There is no account, no limit on files and no watermark on the model. The SVG or image is read and turned into an STL inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded and large files are not held back by a server. Download the STL as often as you like while you change the settings.
Can I turn a PNG into an STL?
Yes. Drop a PNG or JPG here and it is traced first: the dark areas become shapes, with a threshold you can move, and those shapes are raised into a solid. Logos, silhouettes and lettering on a plain background work best. Photos turn into many small islands, which rarely print well.
Can Tinkercad convert SVG to STL?
Yes. Tinkercad imports an SVG as a shape you can resize and give a height, and then exports the design as STL. It needs a free account and works through its online editor. This page is quicker when you only need the extruded file, and it adds a base plate and mirroring for stamps.
Why are parts of my SVG missing in the STL?
An STL is made from filled areas, so lines that only have a stroke, and text that is still live text, have nothing to raise. Convert them first: Outline Stroke and Create Outlines in Illustrator, or Stroke to Path and Object to Path in Inkscape. The converter lists what it left out under the preview.
